The Basics of the Human Cell

Cells are the building blocks of life and the distribution centres of the body.

  • Plasma Membrane: Separates the cell from neighbours and prevents water-based substance from entering the cell.

  • Nucleus: The cell's headquarters—contains the majority of the cell's DNA and tells the cell to grow, divide, or die.

  • Cytoplasm: The interior of the cell is 80% water - many cell reactions occur here.

  • Cytoskeleton: The scaffolding of the cell.

  • Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER): Synthesises, folds, modifies, and transports proteins.

  • Golgi Apparatus: Follows ER processing—this is the post office of the cell because items are packaged and labelled.

  • Mitochondria: The power plant of the cell and the main source of energy (ATP)—the mitochondria helps turn energy from the food and nutrition we get into energy the cell can use.

  • Ribosomes: These live in the nucleus and transcribe DNA into RNA.

  • Lysosomes: The garbage disposals of the cell—lysosomes break down and digest old cell parts.
